Will The United States Postal Service Survive?

The US Postal Service began negotiations today on a new contract with the 211,000-member American Postal Workers Union (APWU).

Top USPS negotiator calls one of the most important negotiations in his 35 years

The negotiations will occur as the USPS is seeking permission to reduce home delivery to five days per week and enact a series of rate increases.

As you may know the Postal Service has suffered from the economic downturn just like other businesses

Email and digital communications make a significant dent in mail volume. Mail volume has declined by 35 billion pieces since 2007, according to postal experts and the Postal Service expects to lose another 28 billion pieces by 2020.

The USPS can’t count on mail volume growth in the future and they need to be flexible in order to survive.

The Postal Service needs greater flexibility in how it schedules its employees, accoding to experts in that it no longer
needs all employees to work a fixed eight-hour schedule.

The Postal Service has gone from an operation that runs 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to a smaller organization that processes mail only 16 hours a day for five or six days a week, he said.

The USPS needs to look at workload and schedule people for when the work needs to be done and how it needs to be done.

We need a mix of different types of employee positions including full time, part time and non-career
employees.

APWU President William Burrus said at the opening of negotiations that “the history of the Postal Service is replete with
forecasts of doom and gloom, but such dire predictions have not prevented us from exploring every opportunity to achieve
agreement.”

The contract with the APWU and a separate one with the National Rural Letter Carriers Association expire November 20.
The USPS will begin negotiations on September 13 with the Rural Carriers.

Improve Email Response With Great Offers

Trying to determine the best offer to improve e-mail response has never been easy for marketers.
They question how much they should give, if a percentage off works better than a flat fee; or whether giving a discount or coupon trains customers to expect similar deals via e-mail.

Speaking as an e-mail subscriber, I appreciate a good offer.  this can best be determined with segmented testing when possible.
Thes best way to test email open rates is to only change one small element and test with an A/B split randomly.

Sort out into two seperate files of equal size, with similar elements.

For a consumer, this is the best of two worlds. He or she gets a discount, and a flat $25 off of that marked-down price. Even if I am not in the mood to shop.
Most people would feel obligated if the offer is good. Inside the e-mail, there is a coupon for 20% off a $250-to-$499 online or in-store purchase, and 30% off a purchase over $500 — plus, of course, the $25 off. Give a deadline to respond to this once in a lifetime offer of less than 3 days.

Its subject line is

Two days left: Save an extra 20% at REI-Outlet‏.” The message works because it has a good offer — an extra
20% off already discounted items. It is also timely and compels the consumer to act now, because there are only two days left.
Both e-mails are excellent examples of how a marketer can use offers and timeliness in subject lines to move inventory and drive sales.

Until next time, here is to your continued success!

Trucking Company Uses Twitter for Lead Generation

Con-Way Inc,

A trucking company and logistics provider is currently using social media to communicate to listen and extend it’s mission.

Con-Way has guided it’s brand onto Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube and also uses blogs to scour the Web for lead generation. This is used for both new customers and new employees as a thought and leadership system.

Unfortunately the reach of social media in business to business marketing isn’t as deep as consumer marketing but the opportunities are still tremendous.

The customers that are currently doing business and have a long term relationship with the companies brand and if one of these customers feels strongly enough to say something online about the services than the return on investment is very high if you can respond right away.

Con-Way uses a simple tool to listen and to respond to posts about the company and it is finding uses for social media that go beyond simple branding. In June, Con-Way launched  a new members-only Twitter page that pushes out load listings to Twitter followers.

The load listings are picked up by independent truckers across the country the trucking industry including individual truck drivers is dependent on mobile devices which makes Twitter a great way to distribute these posts.

The potential audience for the Con-Way Twitter apps is 10,000 third party trucking companies does business with.

Until next time, here is to your continued success!

USPS Summer Sale – Hurry!

June 2, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Use the Summer Sale to reactivate customers or prospect for new

The USPS Summer Sale is scheduled for July 1 to September 30 for standard mailing customers.

This is how the sale works, for every piece a company mails in excess of 105% of what it mailed during the same time period in 2009, the USPS will provide a 30% postage rebate.

Specific requirements and rules of the Summer Sale are available from the USPS.

Your company can take full advantage of the Summer Sale and use it not only as a way to increase acquisition mailings, but to also achieve a reactivation strategy.

Direct marketing theory…

tells you that its costs significantly less to rebuild profitable relationships with former customers than it does to find new acquisition names, as former customers are already aware of your company and products.

This is what makes the USPS summer sale so attractive

By reducing postage costs by approximately one-third on the incremental mail volumes, it reduces the break-even point on these mailings.

Determining which former customers should be included in your reactivation efforts requires a close look at a couple factors.

The mailing list must be accurate, meaning potential delivery issues such as
non ZIP+4 coded, missing or invalid secondary number, vacant or seasonal should be identified and most likely dropped prior to mailing. Remember after one year 20% of the population moves so make sure you have the correct address,

Those planning on taking advantage of the USPS Summer Sale should consider expanding reactivation mailings.

To make these mailings even more effective and beneficial, do not mail records with deliverability issues and try to mail only those with name and address verified using a third party service providers’ data assets.

Until next time, here is to your continued success!

Increase Direct Mail Response with Customized Envelope

With the recent developments in print

You can now customize the outer envelope to increase response rates.

The more personal information you can put on the outside of the envelope without it looking messy. The better the open rate and eventually response rate.

The #10 Envelope

The traditonal No. 10 envelope printed with relevant offers and personalized teaser can often outperform any other type envelope cover.

This is something that needs to be tested.

Some of that information includes a general URL address that enables Prime to track how many people responded to the envelope or some sort of message.

Your envelope printing company is also testing printing tracking codes onto envelopes. When recipients scan the directly to a landing page for the division from which the mail was sent.

We are trying to make envelopes more engaging

Using closed-faced envelopes — those that do not have a window for addresses — with any kind of personalized content means that the printer must include a read and write system that ensures the personalization inside the envelope matches that outside the envelope.

Such systems are commonplace for printers doing insurance,
medical and financial mailings, where there are strict privacy requirements.

It is only in the past few years that general direct mail printers have made more wide use of this tactic, mostly in response to the needs of their customers.

Some commercial printers…

May have a Perfect Match Read and Print systems to address the growth in higher-value, personalized direct mail it was handling.

The camera vision systems are added onto its existing production line and track the production process at full speed.
This allows personalized content to be printed inside a closed-faced envelope and variable content to be printed on the outside.

For many marketers the primary concern is keeping costs to a minimum, which is why more aren’t currently taking advantage of the prime real estate on the outside of the envelope, industry sources say.

Keeping costs….

In mind and either involved a postcard or used a plain envelope. Many marketers consider price first and foremost.

Four-color printing, which has come down in price, is another strategy mailers can use to create an envelope with impact.

Something to test and marketers that 69% of consumers would be more likely to open a mail piece with color text and graphics compared to a plain white envelope without
messaging.

Until next time, here is to your continued success!

Social Media Needs Accountability Measures Like Direct Mail

May 3, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Interactive marketers….

Need to start holding social media accountable.

Direct marketers have always been under close scrutiny to at least break-even for their direct mail campaigns.

The return on investment occurs from the back-end, through renewals of magazine subscriptions, memberships.

Many times, interactive media marketing professionals become impressed with the technology or traffic potential without considering the potential for return on investment instead of taking an analytical approach that will ultimately facilitate its development.

Set Simple and Clear expectations

Too many social media marketing programs lack clear and specific objectives and define the purpose.

Every program that leverages the social Web should have a defined call to action that can be evaluated against a specific outcome, whether a purchase, subscription or other track-able action.

Many times blogs or mobile campaigns include strategies to penetrate social media followers of prospects.

The call to action must also be assigned a value that is well defined. Increasing my number of Twitter followers is only a valid objective if you first define the value of the fan.

Once calls to action are clear

Be sure the program offers transparency into the number of conversions driven by social media.

This is the number that will support future investment in new channels.

Positive Reinforcement

The real opportunity on the social web in 2010 is turning customers into affiliates. Marketers can no longer rely solely on direct programs to deliver their message to prospects.

The message should be seeded with incentives to act as affiliates within their social networks. Marketers must test relevant incentives and determine what motivates their best customers to recruit new ones on their behalf.

Don’t Get Lost in the Hype

It is easy to get excited about social media’s potential, but too much excitement can create false hopes about the real potential that prevent you from accurately identifying strengths and weaknesses as a marketing channel.

By outlining key performance indicators, you can identify points of weakness and optimize for enhanced performance.

Reach:

When an advocate shares, how many people do they engage, how many emails do they send, how many posts, etc?

When a marketer shares, how engaged is their network and what are the click-through rates from invitations?

Monetary Contribution:

Watching metrics closely will allow your organization to optimize programs and ensure continued investment in social media.

Holding social media channels accountable will enable them to become an integral part of the direct marketing arsenal.

Social media must rely on us for expectation setting, incentive development and analysis/optimization – only then can it be as transparent as other channels and garner a larger portion of the marketing budget.

Until next time, here is to your continued success!

Secrets to List Selection – How Not to Fail

March 11, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Nearly 50% of the success of your direct marketing program rests on your list selection.

With over 60,000 lists on the market it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. You must decide which lists will deliver your message to your target customer.

Whether it’s a segment of your internal list that you collected from customers when they purchased online or an external list, the list you use for direct mail, email or telemarketing is critical. This lists represents the universe of people to whom you are going to present your offer.

Is your offer relevant to the people you present it to?

You need to ensure that the list is composed of your target audience before developing your campaign. This is why that nearly 50% of the success of your direct marketing campaign depends on your list selection.

The offer

The offer is almost as important as the list and of course, your product, solution or service must be useful, timely and priced appropriately for your target market.

Remember that the right list and the right offer will generate responses even if the creative is poor..

The creative needs to express your offer in a clear and compelling manner that will gain the attention of your target audience but if you get the offer and list wrong than your certain failure.

There three types of lists:

  • Internal Customer/Prospect Database
  • External Response Lists
  • External Compiled Lists

Your customer database either contains active or inactive customers and is going to perform better than any external list that you could ever purchase. Your database is evolving and changing and constantly eroding active customers unless you are constantly renewing, up-selling and cross-selling like a magazine publishing or membership sites.

Response lists

These are people that have taken action to get on the list like paid magazine subscribers or active membership sites. These could be special interest and respond well to direct mail offers that serve their niche. These lists will generate the highest response rates since the synergy or relevance is there.

Compiled lists

Come from public records with specific demographics like women over 50 that battled with breast cancer. These lists tend to perform the worst and maybe the hardest to convert.
