The biggest benefit of direct response advertising is the ability to laser target your message to your acquired list or active customer database.

Blasting a one size fits all to your current customer database or to a randomly selected list, or to a targeted list based on demographics alone, could lead to a high opt out-rate, eliminating future communications with important consumers. Testing Your “Call To Action”

If you do not include a solid call to action, than your copy will be weak and the response to your offering will decline.

You need to tell your customers the next step they need to take. And just as important, without a call to action, your marketing materials fail to create a sense of urgency.

Without telling your audience exactly what you want then to do they are  left with no direction and no urgency, you’ll probably receive little or no return on your investment.

Of course, if you have been using direct mail marketing even for a small time, you probably already know the importance of a solid call to action, but you may be wondering how, exactly, to write one that works.

Every call to action must be customized tested and perfected for a specific campaign, you must use your creativity and test several call to actions for every situation.

Keep in mind, though, that to reach “expert” level, you will need to test, test, and test some more before you find that perfect phrase that will generate the highest ROI for each marketing campaign.

The History of “Call To Action”

The first thing to remember when you write a call to action is the introductory verb you will use. The very first word of your call to action should be a action calling verb.

Keep the verb short and to the point, such as read, call, and click. As the video explains. Describe what you want them to do, and do so with confidence.

    As for its effectiveness marketers prefer emails in acquiring customers and nurturing prospects, these approaches are completely different and include frequency as well as opt-in best practices—or lack of when acquiring new customers.

    A new BtoB study based on an online survey of 332 b2b marketers in December and January. It found that customer acquisition, cited by 32% of respondents, and lead nurturing (27%) are the two primary goals of email programs.

    The survey found marketers approach the frequency of their email blasts in different ways. Many marketers worry about mailing to their customer base too often.

    Email is still the best marketing choice, but just like with direct mail it’s about quality versus quantity.

    Everyone says that testing is important, but most marketers avoid tests until some later date but testing should be done every time you plan a new campaign.

    Email marketing makes testing super simple, accurate and fast. Results come back in 24 hours. Avoid these mistakes that many email marketers make when testing. Here are six of them:

    When you change more than one item in one version of an email and test it against your control, you won’t learn much.

    If you have two versions of an email are completely different in terms of layout, promotions, copy and even products.

    Any one change might have helped or hurt response, but by putting them all together you can’t tell what was doing what. One change might have helped the open rate increase, while another change in the same email might have reduced clicks. The rule is to test only one element at a time.Looking only at conversions.

    Many people don’t understand that email marketing is permission based. That getting permission before emailing someone is a requirement and was enacted into law by the US Congress Can Spam Act in 2003.

    This means that it is almost never a good idea to purchase e-mail addresses without a double opt-in permission based to use for your e-mail marketing. The average costs for double opt-in email addresses begin at $100 per thousand.

    What is the best and least expensive way to acquire a list

    Create a sign up form and display on your website or special landing page. Make it easy for people to sign up for your e-mail marketing.

    Some business people think of this idea when they think of purchasing e-mail lists.

    You’ll then import the addresses into your email marketing software… and blast them with a special offer email. Sales will come pouring in!

    Great idea?

    Wrong… this is not the way a professional would ever manage a direct mail campaign unless they would like to have a hundreds of angry prospects complain and even have a lawsuit pressed against their company.

    Here are 3 reasons why you shouldn’t buy an email list:

    1. The email list won’t be any good.Too many bounce backs and non-delivery since the list must be updated on a regular basis That means the list will be of poor quality and filled with people who won’t respond to your offer (sorry!)

    2. Your email marketing company will shut off your service. No reputable email service provider will mail to a list of purchased (third party) email addresses. Why not? Because they’ve learned from painful experience that these lists contain so many bad addresses that it’ll get them blacklisted (their mail won’t get delivered). Instead, they’ll refuse to do business with you. Don’t believe me? Read the terms of service of the company you’re using to send emails.

    3. You may be breaking the law. Each email address on that list needs to represent someone that gave permission (opted-in) to receive an email from you. Otherwise, you’re spamming them. Did you know that? It doesn’t matter what the list broker assured you. You’re the one on the hook if you’re breaking the law.

    Instead, consider renting an email list. The most responsive and most expensive lists are magazine response lists to targeted niches.
